Data governance as main topic in the third module Digital Transformation in Research

Digitization is significantly changing the way we deal with data. The amount of data is increasing all the time, and with it, data security, efficient management, backup and availability are becoming more and more important.

The 3. module of our Special Program Digital Transformation in Research with Prof. Stefan Koch of JKU focused on data governance and the holistic management of data throughout its entire lifecycle. Data governance provides overarching frameworks and guidelines, while data management enacts these rules and guidelines in order to be able to use data efficiently for decision-making processes. Our participants learned about the most important frameworks and challenges in implementing them in organizations.

In the second part they received further insight into this topic together with Daniel Spichtinger, MA and our guests Katharina Rieck, MA from FWF and António Biason, MA from the European Commission in the context of research at national and EU level. Our participants gained insight into the principles of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, re-usable) management of research data and which requirements have to be met by the funding bodies and the Commission. A data management plan from the Horizon 2020 funding program was then analyzed hands-on to identify and discuss best practice examples.

Excitingly, the topic of Data Science will continue in January 2022, when we will dive into the world of Machine Learning, AI and Analytics. Until then, happy holidays!
